About this event

Back after a summer hiatus! Join us for Music Mondays in the Nordic Hall of the Scandinavian Living Center. This time we'll hear music from the Rasa String Quartet as follows:

Rasa String Quartet
Emma Powell & Maura Shawn Scanlin, violins
Kiyoshi Hayashi, viola; Mina Kim, cello

Title of the Program:
A Popular Tune

Description of Program:
Immerse yourself in a whimsical blend of folk dances, classical treasures, and rock anthems in A Popular Tune! This program fuses the timeless with the contemporary, featuring reimagined favorites like Stand By Me, Scandinavian folk traditionals, and classical interpretations of popular tunes. From Mumford and Sons to Henry Purcell, this show offers a fun and fresh way to experience the string quartet, where every tune is a hit!

About the quartet:
Rasa String Quartet consists of violinists Emma Powell and Maura Shawn Scanlin, violist Kiyoshi Hayashi, and cellist Mina Kim, who are graduates of the New England Conservatory, the Shepherd School of Music, and Yale University. Rasa String Quartet are winners of various national chamber music competitions and have been the ensemble in residence at Phillips Exeter Academy. They’ve collaborated with Celtic harpist Maeve Gilchrist, Irish fiddler Liz Carroll, and singer-songwriter Judy Collins, and performed across the country and on radio.By exploring the connection between music and storytelling at the heart of folk traditions, Rasa String Quartet delivers fresh, engaging performances that blend classical elegance with folk whimsy, celebrate global traditions, and elevate lesser-known composers.

Music Mondays at the Scandinavian Living Center is a free local concert series supported in part by a grant from the Newton Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council. It is also sponsored by the Village Bank and Newton Community Pride.
