Newton at Home Transportation Policy

Policy:  Newton at Home (NAH) will seek a volunteer driver for every member request for transportation within our service area and hours of operation.  If a volunteer driver is not available, or when a member requests a ride to a location that is outside the service area or hours of operation, NAH will provide the member with a list of fee-for-service NAH screened drivers and services.

Transportation Hours:  Rides from volunteer drivers will be available between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.  Rides must be completed by 7:30 p.m.  Unusual circumstances will be resolved at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Service Area:  Rides will be provided to destinations in Newton and the following towns:  Wellesley, Waltham, Watertown, Weston, Needham, Brookline, Belmont, Brighton, Cambridge, and Boston.  There are no restrictions regarding the kinds of destinations. Rides will be provided to all hospitals and satellite clinics, Logan Airport, museums, symphonies, theaters, malls and grocery stores within the above cities and towns.   Only one-way rides will be provided to theaters and symphonies if the event is not sponsored by Newton at Home.

Requesting Transportation:  At minimum of one week’s notice must be provided for transportation to Logan Airport.  Rides to medical appointments should be scheduled with the NAH office as soon as the appointment is set up.  Grocery shopping and errands should be scheduled one week in advance of the desired time.  Members will be informed at least three days in advance of the request if a volunteer driver is not yet available and given the option to receive the names of paid drivers and taxi companies.  The member will also have the option of having the office continue to seek a volunteer.

Members being picked up at Logan Airport must turn on their cellphones upon arrival in the event that the volunteer driver needs to make contact.

Costs:  Members will pay tolls for any trip on the Mass Pike and for any parking incurred at the destination.  In addition, members will pay volunteer drivers $5.00 to cover the cost of gas to Logan and Boston destinations.  Mileage charges, tolls, and parking for Newton at Home sponsored cultural events will be determined on a case by case basis with car-pooling members splitting tolls, parking and mileage with the volunteer driver.

Special Circumstances:  It is rare that last -minute transportation requests can be arranged. If a request is made, the Member Services Coordinator will determine immediately if the request can be filled, notify the member and provide telephone numbers of paid drivers and taxis if needed.  Rides will not be provided to members requesting transportation to the Emergency Room.  Members should call 911 for emergencies.

On occasion, there are a very small number of volunteers who are willing to provide rides on weekends or during times outside of our service hours. Members may present the request, and the Member Services Coordinator will make an attempt to match the request to those volunteers.  If no volunteer is available, the member will be notified as soon as possible.
